Lee M. Kaplan, MD, PhD

Dr. Kaplan is Director of the Obesity and Metabolism Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. Most recently, he was Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Obesity Medicine Section at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He was previously the founding director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Weight Center, the founding director of the Obesity, Metabolism and Nutrition Institute at MGH, the founding director of the Obesity Medicine Subspecialty Training Program and Chair of the Advanced Biomedical Sciences Program at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS).

Dr. Kaplan received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University and his MD and PhD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowships in gastroenterology/hepatology and genetics at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

He serves in numerous national and international leadership roles, including as the chair of the U.S. Obesity Medicine Fellowship Council, Chair of the Board of The Obesity Society Foundation, Director of the Boston Blackburn Course in Obesity Medicine, recent member of the NIDDK Advisory Council of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and the 2019-2020 president of The Obesity Society.

He is the recipient of numerous scientific and medical awards and honors and is the author of more than 250 peer-reviewed scientific and medical publications.
