Scientific and Clinical Advisory Panels

A unique combination of talents

OMP is partnering with Southampton and Bristol University Hospitals to conduct our first studies.

All members of the Clinical Advisory Panel are independent to OMP.

Scientific Advisory Panel

Professor David Bucknall

Professor David Bucknall

Professor Bucknall holds the Chair in Materials Chemistry at Heriot-Watt University (HWU). His research interests are in areas associated with understanding the structure-property-processing relationship in polymers and composites. His current research includes the behaviour in polymers and composites in harsh environments (incl. high strain rates, pressures and temperatures), functional adaptive materials, energy harvesting, sustainable polymers and elastomer bio-recycling. He is founder and co-director of the HWU led Consortium on Plastics and Sustainability (COMPASS), which is applying multidisciplinary teams to understand and find solutions to issues for the plastics circular economy.

Clinical Advisory Panel

Professor Jeff Brunstrom

Professor Jeff Brunstrom

Jeff Brunstrom is a Professor of Experimental Psychology at the University of Bristol. He co-leads the Nutrition and Behaviour Unit, which is one of the largest groups of its kind in the UK. Major research themes include appetite, weight control, diet, portion size, and food choice, and Jeff has published over 120 papers on these topics.

Mr James Byrne

Mr James Byrne

James is an Upper Gastrointestinal specialist surgeon, working primarily out of University hospital Southampton. James has been responsible for the creation of a multidisciplinary bariatric surgical research group in Southampton with membership of public health, health economics, diabetes and endocrinology, primary care and user involvement through this centre James has been an investigator on several small and large clinical trials. He is also a NICE advisor for Upper GI surgery and a member of the Council of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society.

Professor Julian Hamilton-Shield

Professor Julian Hamilton-Shield

Julian is a Professor of Diabetes and Metabolic Endocrinology at the University of Bristol and The Royal Hospital for Children in Bristol. He has research interests in childhood diabetes, the management and complications of obesity, lipid disorders and metabolic health. His research is based in the Nutrition theme of the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre (https://www.bristolbrc.nihr.ac.uk) and he is lead for industry facing research collaboration.

Dr Elanor Hinton

Dr Elanor Hinton

Dr Elanor Hinton (NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre, Nutrition theme, University of Bristol) has 16 years post-doctoral research experience, after gaining her PhD at the University of Cambridge. A psychologist by background, her primary interest is in understanding the neuroregulation of appetite and obesity by conducting studies in people living with obesity, people with genetic or acquired conditions that effect energy balance, and healthy volunteers. Elanor is lead for public engagement with science for the Nutrition theme and is focussing on increasing Public and Patient involvement in research.

Mr Dimitri Pournaras

Mr Dimitri Pournaras

Dimitri is an Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric and Metabolic surgeon. His research interests are outcomes of bariatric/metabolic surgery beyond weight loss with a focus on obesity associated morbidity and cardiovascular risk. Identification of how these operations work or how bariatric/metabolic surgery changes the way the gut talks to the brain. He is on the editorial board of journals Obesity Surgery and Clinical Obesity and regularly publishes his research.
